Why can't I apply to a job?

When you’re trying to apply to a job on Get on Board and the application won’t go through, it’s almost always one specific block. This article maps the most common reasons a candidate can’t apply to what you can do to fix each one.

Before you can start an application

  • You need to be logged in. Sign in (or create your account) before applying.
  • Your account needs an email on file. Some sign-ups — for example through a social account — can leave your account without an email. Add an email in your profile and you’ll be able to apply.
  • You already applied to this process. You can apply once per hiring round. If you already applied, edit your existing application instead of starting a new one.
  • The job is closed or no longer published. If a company closed or unpublished the job, the apply option goes away. Look for other open roles from the same company.
  • The job is private to a company’s board. Some jobs are private to a company’s board, and only invited candidates can apply.

Required fields when you press “Send”

When you submit, the form checks the fields that particular job asks for. Depending on the job, you may need to provide:

  • A CV or resume.
  • A GitHub or GitLab profile (either one works).
  • A LinkedIn profile.
  • A portfolio URL.
  • A YouTube video link.
  • Your English level, on English-language jobs.
  • Your reason to apply — between 50 and 1,000 characters.
  • Your professional background — between 300 and 2,000 characters.
  • Your expected salary — between 150 and 49,999 USD.
  • All required screening questions answered.

On English-language jobs, your reason to apply must be written in English.

If the job offers Quick Apply

Quick Apply is a lighter flow: it asks for your CV, your English level, and any required questions, but not GitHub, LinkedIn, or a portfolio. If a job offers it, it’s the fastest way to apply. Learn more in What is Quick Apply and how can I activate it?.

Why does my application still show “Incomplete” after I sent it?

After you’ve successfully applied, you might still see an orange Incomplete badge (with a pen icon) on the application. This does not mean your application failed — it was received. The badge reflects fields still missing from your current profile, such as:

  • Academic background
  • Reason to apply
  • Unanswered required questions
  • A required attachment: CV, GitHub or GitLab, LinkedIn, portfolio, YouTube, or phone

Because the badge reads your current profile, it can appear or clear as you edit your profile after applying. Fill in the missing field anywhere in your profile and the badge clears on its own. Quick Apply applications don’t show this badge.
